Therizinosaurus: Jurassic World's 'Scythe Lizard' That Could Kill a T. Rex

Dinosaurs have been popular in popular culture for decades, thus species like the T-Rex and Velociraptor are virtually generally known.

Another dinosaur, Therizinosaurus, may have gone unnoticed. The massive six-ton dinosaur was recently seen in a trailer for the upcoming Jurassic World: Dominion movie, where it was depicted as a stalking danger.

While Therizinosaurus isn't as well-known as some other dinosaurs, it was capable of stopping a Tyrannosaur in its tracks.

According to the Western Australian Museum, the dinosaur lived some 70 million years ago in what is now known as eastern Asia, while bones have also been discovered in North America.

Therizinosaurus was a strange-looking dinosaur with wide hips, a pot belly, and long arms ornamented with yard-long claws at the hands that were so huge they would have been the longest claws in the animal kingdom. The dinosaur is known as a "scythe lizard" because of its natural blades.

The dinosaur was extremely enormous, standing roughly 16 feet tall.

These are just that: approximations of the dinosaur's appearance. The dino's whole body is only known from its forelimb skeleton, according to the Natural History Museum of the United Kingdom, therefore reconstructions of its full body are purely conjecture.

Regardless, despite its potentially dangerous appearance, Therizinosaurus is not known to have consumed meat. Despite this, the dinosaur would have defended itself against an approaching tyrannosaur with its massive claws.

Another mystery surrounding Therizinosaurus is whether it possessed feathers. They can be shown with or without the dinosaur.

Therizinosaurus lived during the Late Cretaceous period, therefore it would have coexisted alongside dinosaurs like Spinosaurus, Triceratops, Tyrannosaurus, and Velociraptor.

Around 66 million years ago, the end of the Cretaceous period marked the end of the dinosaurs, and the Earth underwent one of the largest mass extinction catastrophes in history.

The exact nature of the event is still a matter of contention among scientists, although the most popular opinion is that it was caused by a huge asteroid impact. The Chicxulub crater in the Gulf of Mexico, which spans 93 miles and is 12 miles deep, is assumed to be the result of the collision.

In any case, birds are the only dinosaurs known to have survived the apocalypse. Frogs, salamanders, lizards, alligators, and crocodiles, as well as certain mammals, are believed to have survived the devastation.
